MAYRA VIZCAINO DE BOLANOS

People.
Purpose.
Impact.

A life is measured not only by what we accomplish, but by the people we walk beside along the way.

THE THREAD

It's the person on the other side of the problem.

I've spent much of my professional life solving problems. For more than two decades, that meant working in technology and telecommunications—analyzing complex systems, leading teams, managing projects, and helping build and evolve the networks that transformed the way we communicate.

Today, solving problems still gives me tremendous satisfaction. But somewhere along the journey, I realized that what matters most to me isn't the problem. It's the person on the other side of it. I feel most fulfilled when I can make someone feel heard, help make a path a little easier, or know that in some small way I made a difference.

STORIES & COMMUNITY

Our experiences have a purpose.

I believe the things we experience in life aren't meant simply to be stored away. Sometimes they become knowledge. Sometimes a warning. Sometimes encouragement. And sometimes their greatest purpose is allowing us to sit beside another person and genuinely say:

“I understand. I see you.”

Not because we have the answer, but because we have walked a similar road. Stories create connection. Sometimes helping doesn't mean leading someone out of the journey. Sometimes it simply means walking beside them through it.

MY JOURNEY

Different chapters. A common thread.

01

Starting again

More than 25 years ago, I came to the United States looking for an opportunity to grow professionally and excited by the adventure of beginning a new life abroad. Building a life in another country meant adapting to a new language, food and culture while deeply missing my family, especially my mom. I had to rebuild community, professional reputation and belonging. At the same time, I kept nurturing friendships in Ecuador—some dating back to elementary school. Today, my community stretches across countries and decades.

02

Learning & transformation

My telecommunications career began in the era of analog cellular technology. Over the next two decades, I had the opportunity not simply to watch the cellular industry transform, but to play a role in that transformation—working through successive generations of technology, testing new products and features, solving complex network problems, and helping networks evolve as communication changed dramatically. The technology kept evolving, and so did I.

03

Sharing what I learn

I discovered that I loved learning, but I also loved sharing what I learned. Colleagues trusted me with increasingly complex problems and projects. Some required days of studying, testing and analyzing before the answer emerged. I loved that. I became an expert in my field. I was good at what I did. But eventually I began asking whether this was the only kind of impact I wanted to make.

04

Choosing what matters

I stepped away from telecommunications for five years to focus on raising my children—one of the best decisions I ever made. When it was time to return professionally, I realized I had changed. I explored small businesses, learned new things and followed paths that didn't always lead where I expected. Today, I don't see those experiences as detours. They were paving the road.

05

A new chapter

Eventually that road led me into another professional chapter, and once again I found myself doing what I have done throughout my life: learning, solving, sharing and working with people.

GIVING BACK

Community is something we build.

I believe meaningful communities are created when people contribute what they have—time, knowledge, experience, relationships, or simply the willingness to show up.

Education is particularly important to me. I support community initiatives that expand opportunities for children, including programs providing Montessori education to children with limited resources and summer opportunities to experience music and the arts. I also support efforts that help seniors and people experiencing financial hardship maintain mobility and independence through access to transportation.

And sometimes volunteering is much simpler. I enjoy showing up in my city, meeting the people who live here and helping create experiences that make our community a better place to call home.

You don't have to change the whole world to make a difference in someone's world.
